Moron Morality

Moron Morality

I felt the need to work out some of the aggression inspired by last night's fiasco, so I've composed a few harsh words  for the largely low-income conservative Christian voters who supported Bush on the basis of so-called "moral values."  If you're not fond of vitriol, read no further.

Dear Bush Supporter,
You disgust me.  Your opposition to marriage rights for gay couples not a "principle" worthy of respect; it is rank prejudice, and it, and you, deserve nothing but contempt from all civilized people.  You are on the same moral plane as your ancestors who opposed interracial marriage, and your descendants will look back on it with the same embarrassment with which most of you look back on that.  You are the ethical and intellectual heirs of the racist conservatives of the last century, and like them, you are fighting an unwinnable rearguard action against the march of human rights.  You and the militant Muslims you so detest deserve each other; you're two sides of the same worthless coin.  You have won this battle, but you and your cause are nevertheless destined for the proverbial ash bin of history.

By deciding to vote based on this imaginary "threat" to your so-called "moral values," you have given America another four years of the most incompetent, irresponsible, ideologically driven administration in its history.  When you or your children are drafted and sent of to be killed in the Middle East, blame yourself; it was your choice.  When you're laid off because your employer found somebody in India to do your job at a tenth of your salary, blame yourself; you asked for it.  When you're sick from the mercury emissions of that new coal-fired power plant down the road, and can't get healthcare because you were laid off, blame yourself; it's your fault.  I, who voted to spare you these misfortunes, will suffer none of them.  I'm one of those upper-middle-class, Northeastern/Left Coaster (born and raised in Maryland, living in California), academic, elitist liberals you love to hate.  My family, unlike yours, will actually benefit financially from Bush's tax cuts, and I can afford decent healthcare, a post-graduate education that qualifies me for the kind of job that will never be outsourced, and a home in the kind of neighborhood that can afford to keep polluters at a distance.  I'm just a little too old to draft, and would in any case have no problem with telling my recruiting office that I'm bisexual in order to disqualify myself.  Not true, but effective -- and not being a bigot like you, I would feel no shame in it.  My two younger brothers, who are of military age, actually ARE bisexual, so I have no fears for them either.  I will mourn the damage that four more years of this administration will do to my country, but I will survive it.  Some of you will not, and you will get no sympathy from me; you brought it on yourselves.

If this offends you, I don't care.  At this point I'm not trying to persuade you; you are manifestly too stupid to be persuaded by any argument I could make.  If the disasters of the next four years bring you to your senses, good.  If not, well, America is better than you, and America will out-live you and your beliefs.  The youngest cohort of voters did not vote your way, and as you die off, you will be replaced by a more enlightened, more tolerant generation.  You are America's past; people like me are its future, and I for one will waste no more time on you.  Good night, good luck coping with the consequences of your vote, and may God have mercy on your soul; you're going to need it.

Great post, Alex.  I couldn't have said it better myself!

Re: Excellent letter. (none / 0)

Well, it made me feel better, anyway; having purged a bit of the rage, I can now go back to being my usual, reasonably civil self.

One more thing.... (none / 0)

Before I go back to being polite, I should add one more to the list of Bush-related misfortunes: when your teenage daughter dies from a botched back-alley abortion because a Bush-appointed Supreme Court Justice denied her ownership of her own body, blame yourself; her blood is on your hands.
Later,

Hope you feel better now (I don't) (none / 0)

To state the obvious, progressives need a plan to combat the ignorance of the electorate. One thing to do is lobby to get the old "equal time" rules back on the air waves.
How do we frame a new moral debate that includes the needs of the poor, the destruction of the environment, etc.?
We need some kick-ass PR here1

Well said. (none / 0)

I couldn't agree with you more.  Here is something I posted the other night that you may or may not have seen concerning the moral issues that we lost on.

A great number of posters were suggesting that we begin to cater to the Christian right and embrace their "moral values" in order to win their vote.  I completely disagree and a quick reminder in history will explain that the majority is not always right.

North American Slavery
Slavery anywhere
Germany in the 1930s

We are in the minority right now, but as you pointed out the younger voters appear to be more enlightened and hopefully in the next generation the tide will turn in our favor, but we have much work ahead.
Those on the bus with Rosa Parks
Enron executives
etc, etc, etc,

We must not give in to these idiots.  We are right, they are wrong.

That's a great letter. Up a few diaries you'll find a discussion of the "fear of the other." The CrackerBelt voters have no idea what they've done. I'm finding it hard to stay reasonable anymore, myself. Unlike the majority of posters here, I begin to think that the US is a lost cause and that I will spend the rest of my life elsewhere.

right on.... (or am I dating myself!) (none / 0)

Well put Alex! Now if only those things would actually happen, so that the bible belt would awaken from this religious nightmare that they call moral values. I'm constantly reminding my school-age children that we are more like the early patriots than the Pro-Bush group.. going along with the group is NOT patriotic, standing up for what is right IS. I love to remind these stodgy rightwing people who wrap themselves in the flag that if this were the revolutionary war they would be the enemy! It blows their minds.

I too was raised in the east and live in CA.I will profit handsomely from the demise of inheritance taxes, but I'd gladly pay more if that's what it takes to even out the disparity between the ultra-rich and the poor. There is more to life than money. Religion has been used for centuries to herd the ignorant masses in support of corrupt leaders. Wake-up America.

Whither America? (none / 0)

Bird: I agree about the equal time rule, but we're not going to get it from this administration and this Congress.  Our best hope is to aim for the kind of sea change the repugs achieved in the 1994 midterm election.  To get that, we'll have to fasten on one issue, one egregious mistake of the next two years, and hammer it incessantly.  For the repugs, it was Clinton's healthcare plan.  We don't know yet what it will be for Bush, but being who he is he's bound to give us something; we just need a leader with Gingrich's strategic savvy and single-minded vision to make it work for us.  I don't know who that would be, but we'd better figure it out soon.

Liberalintexas: I agree with you in principle, but I also really, really wish the phrase "gay marriage" had not been a part of the political discourse this year.  A solid majority in the country opposes us on that one, and we are not going to change that fact any time soon; we need to drop the subject and wait for the oldest generation of evangelicals to die.  Their up-and-coming replacements in the electorate are not as homophobic, and sooner or later demographic shifts will take care of this issue, but trying to fix it too soon is counterproductive, as we learned the day before yesterday.

JHGrimson: I've been thinking about that possibility myself.  My fiancee is Canadian, so I could move there after we get married next May.  The only problem is the weather; I don't care much for the cold -- and the economy, which would make it harder for me to find a job than it probably will be here (I'm working on a Master's in entomology, an haven't decided for sure yet whether I want to continue on to a Ph.D. -- if I don't, I'll be looking for work most likely as a community college biology instructor).

CAMom: Some of it will come to pass, and some of Bush's supportes will indeed reap the whirlwind; the only question is whether it will be enough to make any difference to their well-nigh invincible ignorance.
